Cooking 101: Pesto!

July 25th, 2009

Ah.. Pesto.  I discovered how to make this last year.  Prior to that, I just never really had any =)  Summer is in full swing, and basil is CHEAP!  The local grocery store I go to… fresh basil pots = $5 CAD!  That’s incredible.  Make tons of this stuff, and freeze it so you have pesto all year around.  While picking your basil apart, apparently you don’t need to take the stems (I didn’t know), just pick the leaves off, leave the plant back in the sun and water it, and it’ll grow back.  Crazy stuff! » More: Cooking 101: Pesto!

Trattoria Italian Kitchen Review – Vancouver

July 19th, 2009

Under the Glowbal Group, Trattoria and Italian Kitchen offer the same type of cuisine(Italian) in a hip and trendy setting but Trattoria is much more affordable. It has the open kitchen concept where we can see exactly what the chefs are doing and see our food as it is being prepared. We were greeted and seated promptly and within 10 minutes after ordering we got our food which was extremely fast for a restaurant like this. I was very hungry so I can’t complain I got my food too soon but it is a fine dining restaurant. I thought the food is supposed to come slowly so we have time to chat and enjoy the comfortable ambiance of the restaurant? I ordered a spaghetti with Kobe meatballs and my friend ordered a linguine with jumbo tiger prawns. The food was brought to our table by a very young individual. He forgot to offer us freshly grated Parmesan cheese. After we started enjoying our pasta, our server came over and asked if we wanted freshly grated Parmesan. A little too late, isn’t it? But at least he knew and he apologized for offering it a little late. » More: Trattoria Italian Kitchen Review – Vancouver

The Pink Door – Downtown Seattle, Pike Place

July 14th, 2009

Those who know me are not surprised by my huge inner geek (some would argue outer as well).  For years I have wanted to watch a Final Fantasy concert, and on July 9, 10, and 11; Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds was at the Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Washington.  I booked some tickets, a couple months ago and went down there for the weekend.  The show was incredible, Nobuo Uematsu himself was there!!  But that’s really another blog post. » More: The Pink Door – Downtown Seattle, Pike Place

Prima Strada Pizzeria (Janine’s Review) – Cook Street Village Victoria

July 9th, 2009

Finally! It’s about time that someone brought real Italian wood oven made pizzas to Victoria’s doorstep. Prima Strada located in Victoria’s Cook St. Village was recommended to me by a friend a few months ago and am i glad they did. Since then I’ve introduced friends and family to my new find and all of them agree this is great pizza! I’ve travelled around Italy a number of times sampling pizzas as i go because hey, when in Rome…. and i found that all Italian pizzas can be characterized by their thin crisp crust and fresh simple ingredients. Prima Strada does a great job of making these thin crust pizzas the Italian way using traditional ingredients such as freshly sliced prosciutto crudo, parmigiano, and anchovies, plus there is always the option of adding some of your favorite ingredients for that personal touch. The pizzas range from $11-16 and are fairly large in size and unless you have a large appetite they are great for sharing. Aside from the pizzas, Prima Strada features other Italian foods and beverages like antipasti misti, fennel salad, gelato for dessert, some local and Italian wines and beers, and a selection of coffee which is average in quality. » More: Prima Strada Pizzeria (Janine’s Review) – Cook Street Village Victoria
